First class Tokaj vineyards

We are thinking about exceptional and prime vineyards from the start. We are also working in Tokaj, in the Teleki vineyard and in Tállya, in Görbe. In both places, we started with abandoned, poorly maintained plantations, which we have painstakingly restored. We believe that we can make a serious wine from both areas. Tállya has most of the historic first class vineyards, and we would like to farm in areas similar to the current ones.

The vineyards are the basis of our winemaking. The good conditions create the opportunity to deal with ‘the tradition of Tokaj, the vineyards’, to quote László Alkonyi. Not without reason, since the oldest dűlő names in Tokaj-Hegyalja are 800 years old. In 1730, the geographer Mátyás Bél made a complete survey of the Tokaj-Hegyalja dűlőja, describing all the dűlőja and indicating the quality, first, second or third class of the area.

Görbe

The first mention of the Görbe vineyard was relatively late, only in 1644. Among the previous owners was the town of Bártfa, later the Trautsons and later the noble families of Balogh and Mudrány. It was then inherited by the Reformed Church until the middle of the 20th century.

The bedrock is a mixture of coarse-grained riolite tuff, riolite tuff, rock flour and clay in varying proportions, and is typically a well-watered, south-facing vineyard.

The plots under cultivation are predominantly furmint vineyards, with some lime and yellow cherry vines, in keeping with the old plantations. Legend has it that there are also vines that are almost a hundred years old, and we try to cultivate them accordingly. The first few vintages were more about getting to know each other and gaining experience, but we feel that the potential for great wine is there in Görbe.

TELEKI

The Teleki vineyard is located in Kopaszhegy, Tokaj, next to the Szarvas vineyard. It is a historic first class area with excellent conditions. According to records, it was already a royal estate in the time of King Matthias, which shows its value.
It is a loess dune of Pleistocene origin, with mineral bedrock beneath a layer of loess several metres thick.
Two plots are cultivated in the vineyard, 200 metres apart. The furmint was the first small area where we started working. András started to clear it under the covid, we have a lot of work to do to make wine from it today, so it is very close to our hearts. We lease it for the long term, so we can plan with it.
On the other parcel, we grow yellow muskmelon, which is considered by many to be the most popular variety in the wine region, and one of the most popular in our range. It’s a south-facing area and the muscatel ripens early, so we usually start the harvest here. At the end of the area there is a small cottage with a strawberry tree and elderberry bushes, and we have distant plans to make it a more substantial feature than it is now.

KÖZÉPHEGY

The vineyard is located between Rátka and Mád, west of Mád, in the neighbourhood of Holdvölgy, in the embrace of two vineyards. The soil is bentonitic bedrock with underlying quartzitic riolitic tuff. It is a south-south-west facing area, a historic third class vineyard.

It is not a first class vineyard, but it is a reliable one, with neighbours such as the Zsirai’s and Géza Lenkey and a view of the new Sauska estate centre opposite, which is not the last sight to be seen. We bought it in an unused state, after preparation we replanted it in 2022, a drought year. Because of this, we had to water several times to get the seedlings to mature and grow. This year, 2024, was the first year we saw bunches, and we are gradually counting on it from the next harvest onwards. We hope to produce stable base wines from here.
